Residential Schools: Newspaper Articles Exploring
Causes and Consequences
This writing project is heavily integrated with our Social Studies inquiry into Residential Schools in Canada. To gain an understanding of the history of residential schools in Canada, students will be broken into 5 groups that will each explore the state of Indigenous peoples in Canada and residential schools during a particular period in Canada's history. Students will be required to use appropriate research skills to find at least one important event relating to Indigenous peoples and Residential Schools during this period and explore the causes and consequences of the events. Students will use desktop publishing software (Microsoft Publisher, Mac Pages...etc) to publish their articles in mock newspapers from the time period they studied, including advertisements and other common newspaper features.
During Social Studies inquiry periods and Knowledge Building circles (not detailed on this website), students will share information and create a timeline of events that tracks the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada in relation to the creation and dissolution of residential schools in Canada.
Students will then use the information gathered to write newspaper articles about the chosen events during Writer's Workshop. This writing project focuses on features of newspaper articles, voice, causes and consequences of events in Canadian history.
Critical Literacy Connections
Why did it take so long for the Residential Schools to be closed?
Why did it take so long for Canada to issue an apology?
Are all of these events represented in history books? Why or why not?
How were these events reported on? Were they reported on at all?
